INTERIORS
All seven high 3–5-bedroom duplex penthouses with private roof terraces are adorned with native planting and established olive trees and have their distinctive attributes. A mix of double and triple aspect, fully embracing the concept of engawa with the open planning living areas facilitating optimal views and movement easily throughout, seamlessly flowing into the outdoor terraces. The furniture is arranged to apportion subtle zones that are nevertheless separated. The living area is oriented with large comfortable seating zones, a movable TV stand, and feature seating providing versatility of usage allowing for intimate zones, family times and myriad hosting options using the many culinary formats available to owners. A welcoming yet sophisticated feel with natural materials like walnut wood accented with blues yellows and golds in the furnishings bring warmth and personality to the living and dining areas.
Iroko wood floors throughout bring refinement and serenity to the space, enhancing the building’s prevailing biophilic elements. Equipped with Miele appliances contemporary Bulthaup kitchens further open up the light-filled space and harmonise with the buildings’ elegant proportions. Bathrooms with Magres, Calcata tiles and simple, chic hardware provide a sense of calm and sanctuary. The bedrooms continue this cocooning feel; design pieces, fabrics, quality of detailing and soothing colour palettes making supreme comfort the common thread. Terraces act as an extension of the interior’s ambiance decked out with furniture by Belgian brand Vincent Sheppard.
All duplex penthouses have an interior lift and have been kitted out with the latest in Smart Home technology.
Chitra Stern, co-founder of Elegant Group, developer, and operator of Martinhal, talks about the approach to the interior design. “Our intention was to choose a palette that would quietly reference the blues of the river Tagus and the verdant green of the surrounding park without distracting from the uplifting views themselves. The interiors work in harmony with the abundance of light, the beautiful geometries, and the unique setting. Natural palettes of cream, sand, stone, powdery mint, and blues imbue the space with a sense of calm and ease countered with monochromatic touches for self-assured elegance. The result we think captures a modernist sensibility ideally suited to our owner’s lifestyle.
Each penthouse can be curated with a selection of Vitra furnishings – the first of its kind for Lisbon. Capturing the modernity of Martinhal Residences, and prevailing tendency to contemporary design to appeal to the erudition of buyers. Specially selected pieces include: Arne Jacobsen, Louis Poulsen floor lamp; Nani Marquina Losanges II Kilim rug by the Bouroullec Brothers; Vitra Jean Prouvé’s EM Table; Softshell Chair by the Bouroullec Brothers; Louis Poulsen PH Artichoke copper pendant light; Jasper Morrison Soft Modular Sofa for Vitra; Noguchi Coffee Table in walnut for Vitra; Occasional Low Table by Jasper Morrison; Bovist Ottoman by Hella Jongerius; Eames LCW Chair; Alvar Aalto pendant lights & 64 bar stools for Artek; Rayonnage Mural shelf by Jean Prouvé.

ARCHITECTURE
Multi award-winning architecture studio Capinha Lopes worked together with Elegant Group, to create a distinctive landmark building, inspired in part by Hundertwasser’s Vienna and Stefano Boeri’s, Boscale Verticale in Milan.
The building doesn’t have a formal plinth, but this effect is achieved through the existence of a horizontal ‘sunshade’ which is cantilevered from the building. This concrete element separates the public common areas from the apartments. In addition, the façade below this sunshade is cladded with stone.
The building departs from its orthogonal shape with the existence of the many balconies and landscaped plantings, arranged in different positions and sizes, which give the main volumetric expression of the façade. The different floor levels are enhanced by these horizontal elements, but wherever there are vertical connections inside ie. staircases and lift hallways, there is a ‘wood’ cladded façade transitioning from the bottom all the way to the top.
The project aims to bring the greenery of the park above ‘Jardim do Cabeço das Rolas’ into the building and surrounding landscape. This is done by walkable paths that lead directly to the park, and by the landscaped stepped terraces which host a myriad of plants.
The building is defined by three aspects: transparency, fluidity, and sustainable integration. Transparency is assured by the favouring of the visual axis between Av. Dom João II and the Park ‘Jardim do Cabeço das Rolas’. Fluidity is assured by the public nature of the landscape, and the continuity of pedestrian routes, which facilitate moving seamlessly from the street to the garden to the park, across the built environment. The sustainable integration of the building is achieved by bringing natural elements into the building design (with the plants which define the balconies across the 4 façades.
“With such a spectacular location it was important to create spaces that showcase the panoramic views and seamlessly transition from interior spaces to exterior living and beyond to this architecturally rich area,” said architect, Eduardo Capinha Lopes. “Rooms are open and uncluttered, naturally drawing the eye outside to the dramatic cityscape and nature on the doorstep. In harmonising the interior and exterior, we created a serene and inviting living environment, with an underlying line of luxury.”
