A blissful escape to Champneys Spa

By Donna Richardson

“It’s always a good idea to do something relaxing before making an important decision in your life.” Paulo Coelho once mused.

The perfect way to help my sister relax before getting married was to treat her to a day of relaxation at Champneys Springs Spa in Ashby De La Zouch.

Set in 31 acres of countryside, Champney’s Springs is the UK’s first purpose-built health spa, which offers a different experience to the traditional country retreats in its portfolio. The Champney’s story began in 1925 and is built on the ideals of naturopath Stanley Leif, making it the oldest health spa group in the country. It offers over 150 treatments focused on health and wellbeing. The brand is synonymous with luxury and has famous patrons, including Naomi Campbell, Daniel Craig, and Brad Pitt. Currently, it is owned by the Perdew family.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by a picturesque water feature and ornate gardens as we checked in and received our luxurious bathrobes. Our day began with a refreshing dip in the hydro pool and swimming area when we decided to lounge in an egg chair with our strawberry daiquiris and watch the sunset. After preparing in our room, we treated ourselves to a healthy and delicious three-course dinner in the dining room, with me opting for a chicken dish and my sister choosing a vegetarian option.

The following day, we eagerly arose for a leisurely and healthy breakfast; where I was amazed by the beautiful choice and opted for fresh salmon, eggs, cereals, and fruits.

Our scheduled treatments awaited, and I chose a couture touch massage to soothe the aches and pains from my demanding travel schedule. At the same time, my sister experienced the cutting-edge Elemis biotech facial, which was bespoke to her needs.

Stepping into one of the spa’s 52 luxurious rooms, I immediately felt a sense of tranquillity. My therapist, Anais, ‘s calm demeanour and soothing whale music set the stage for pure relaxation. The ensuing 50 minutes were blissful as Anais worked on all the knots in my back and then pampered me with a facial using the latest Elemis products.

Emerging from the treatment room, I felt rejuvenated and glowing. Meanwhile, my sister enjoyed her biotech facial, so I indulged in a soak in the bath using my newly purchased Champneys products. After our treatments, we savoured a healthy lunch of grilled meats and fish, salads, fruits, and veggies, all designed by top nutritionists to help us unwind without guilt.

A spa break at Champneys is a golden opportunity to spend the entire day in a robe without feeling guilty, allowing for peaceful downtime and reconnection. The Ashby spa’s emphasis on fitness, with its regular classes and top-notch gym, completes the holistic experience. As we lounged around in our robes, we fully embraced the bliss of a spa day. We lounged around in the relaxation areas, swam in the 25-metre swimming pool, and made use of the cutting-edge thermal experiences.

Over 20 fitness classes are offered daily, and state-of-the-art fitness studios are available for those who like to work out. You can also hire a bike and cycle around the grounds.

It was a chance to switch off, immerse ourselves in tranquillity, and indulge in well-earned time off. Our day concluded with some leisurely time by the hydrotherapy pool and swimming area before we headed home, feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on life’s adventures with a refreshed perspective.

I would highly recommend Champneys Spa as a prelude to any significant life event, allowing you to unwind and recharge in the heart of the countryside. With properties scattered all over the country, including the flagship one in Tring and another at Forest Mere, I look forward to experiencing more of Champney’s treatments and products at one of their sister properties soon. Champneys offers a variety of overnight getaways designed for couples, friends, or solo spa-goers, providing the perfect opportunity to relax and rejuvenate.
